Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing our world today. And while we’re just starting to feel the effects, our neighbours are already paying the price. From flash flooding in Asia to long-term droughts in Sub-Saharan Africa, people in the developing world are suffering.

In the next few years we must find ways to slow and reverse this trend, but there are important things we can do right now to help our neighbours.

A Homegrown African Revolution

Global warming is hitting the developing world hardest. USC Canada’s Seeds of Survival program offers protection to some of the world’s poorest farmers. SoS combines local expertise with scientific knowledge to help farmers adapt to the challenges of climate change.

SoS helps farmers set up local seed banks so they can avoid buying commercial seeds and can continue growing native crops – crops nurtured for generations to withstand the harshest environmental conditions. Plus, by planting native crops, farmers can invest profits in their communities rather than paying for imported fertilizers and chemicals.

SoS started in Ethiopia during the famine of the 1980s and has since reached farmers in over 30 countries worldwide.

A Serious Global Threat

Global seed companies are developing seeds that are genetically programmed to be sterile after first harvest. These Terminator seeds will stop farmers from saving seeds for re-planting, forcing them to buy new seeds year after year – an expense most simply can’t afford.

Help us stop global seed and chemical companies from pushing unwanted Terminator seeds on the world’s poorest farmers.
