On December 10th, 2008, countries around the world mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Adopted by the UN after WWII, the Declaration emphasises rights and freedoms – including the right to food – that are held to apply to everyone on the planet.
And yet, even after 60 years, more than one billion people are chronically undernourished. Every single day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger related causes.
There is a way forward.
USC supports small scale farmers in developing countries by fostering strategies to keep them on their lands, producing healthy food for their families and their communities. Canadians have a key role to play by writing letters to government, signing petitions, supporting the right to food, or simply by learning more.
For a more thorough explanation of how small scale farming can help promote food justice, read Pathways to Resilience – a discussion paper from the Canadian Food Security Policy Group, of which USC canada is a member.
