Last week, we noted three major agricultural announcements that were, at first glance, disconnected. But they all seem to be pointing to a growing school of thought around food, farming, and the future:
- On Feb 23, the Independent reported that French President Nicholas Sarkozy announced an historic move to an organic agricultural policy that supports small, traditional farmers.
- The next day brought a report that US President Barrack Obama has appointed Kathleen Merrigan – a professor who worked on organic labeling rules – to the No. 2 spot at the US Department of Agriculture. That move has been hailed by sustainable agriculture advocates everywhere.
- And then, at the end of the week, renowned musician Neil Young issued an emotional plea, published in the Boston Globe, to recognize the crucial potential of family farms in a time of chaotic economic conditions.
These ideas may be coming from the global North but they have the power to resonate and impact the policies that affect our global neighbours everywhere. North and South, we’re in this together.
Among all the bad news that hits us daily, here I find some interesting and positive messages. Good work USC Canada ! I am passing this on, as you know.
Thank you for your continued support, and for helping us spread the word!
This is a hopeful sign for family farmers and all of us who care about the food we eat.
Thanks Donna, It is indeed a hopeful sign. And it looks like it’s not going to stop there. The Economist recently reported that the new US secretary of agriculture, Tom Vilsack, announced that his department would create “The People’s Garden” out of a paved area outside their building. He also wants to establish community gardens at each of the department’s offices around the world. You can read the full article here.
