This was a record breaking weekend indeed – both for the 13 runners who managed to “Go the Distance” for USC Canada, and for the 35th anniversary of the Ottawa Race Weekend. Race Weekend set a record for number of participants – over 36,000 athletes – taking part in 7 race events. Cheering crowds, numbering more than 100,000, lined the city streets. The support was greatly appreciated by USC runners, especially towards the end of their races!
A record 13 runners – staff, friends, and family – dedicated themselves to getting in shape and putting their bodies on the line for USC Canada in 5 different events:
Eight runners covered distances they had never run before. Nervous energy on the various starting lines was palpable, but everyone was able to complete their races. Congratulations to all runners, and in particular to first-timers Sarah Dalle, Hugo and Charlotte Roy, and Lillian Thomas in the 10 K, Kathy Secord and Zdenek Tuma in the half marathon, Fiona Beaton in the kid’s marathon, and Daniel Burnier who worked through muscle cramps to complete his very first marathon!
Just as exciting for USC is that our fundraising drive went well beyond expectations. Runners raised more than $4,000 for USC’s Seeds of Survival program through this year’s Going the Distance project.
This is the 10th year that runners have gone the distance for USC, bringing the grand total raised so far to more than $28,000! Kudos to all USC supporters. It’s clear this project has legs – and more runners have already pledged to train for next year’s Race Weekend!
