Time Magazine’s August 31st cover story offers a compelling “must-read” about the broken food system. It not only uncovers the hidden costs of our cheap food and a system that is destroying soils, food, and health, but also describes what writer Bryan Walsh suggests is a way forward.
Although the context is American, Canadians can relate to much of it. Read through it and let us know what you think. What questions does this article raise for you? What food shopping and eating practices are you willing to reconsider?
For some years now, there has been a growing voice for sustainable agriculture, one that considers the interconnectedness of soil, weather, crops, animals and their integrated life cycles. That the issue has finally reached TIME magazine and, by extension, “everyman” and “everywoman” is heartening. Perhaps now, a new agroecology will emerge, on the ground, around the world. Perhaps now there will be more political will to actively support community and family farms and smaller-scale production. It appears that the US is heading more in that direction than Canada, if recent announcements from each federal government are any indication. US- support for family farms. Canada- money for biotech firms.
