Attention teachers and students! Want to be a part of the solution?

Do something constructive this fall – eat rice! On November 18th, join students and teachers across Canada and the world for Rice Day 2009.

Organized by the Newfoundland-based NGO Two Villages and USC Canada, Rice Day encourages students and teachers to eat a simple bowl of white rice for lunch on Rice Day – and donate their lunch money – to help young people in Timor Leste. You can join us by helping to organize a Rice Day at your school: it will raise awareness about young farmers in developing countries, and raise funds for the ” Young Farmers Scouts” of Timor Leste.

The Young Farmer Scouts are helping young people in six villages in this tiny, remote Asian country build their agricultural and leadership skills, while feeding their community. So, how can you get involved? It’s actually quite simple.

  • If you are a student: Ask your teacher to help you organize Rice Day at your school. Download the student leaders’ guide to help you get started.
  • If you are a teacher: Bring together students who have the interest and ability to launch Rice Day at your school. Find out how to get started.
  • If you are a parent: Encourage your children to get involved in international development by forwarding this email to them.

USC and Two Villages have been fundraising and awareness-raising for Rice Day since 2006. It’s grown to be an event shared among thousands of students in many schools and communities. This year, it’s expanding outside Newfoundland and across the country – and there’s even a school in Bermuda participating! Check out the student leader kit, school administrator info, Timor fact sheet, photos and more at www.twovillages.org.
