“The state of biodiversity is declining, the pressures upon it are increasing, and the benefits derived by humans from biodiversity are diminishing…responses so far have not been adequate to address the scale of biodiversity loss or reduce the pressure.” - Executive Summary |
The third Global Biodiversity Outlook Report was released today – and the world needs to pay attention. Scientists and international organizations, including the UN, are ringing alarm bells. We still have a chance to turn things around, but only if we act quickly and effectively.
The UK’s Guardian newspaper posted this story – an overview of some key issues. You can download the Executive Summary of the GBO Report here. Or take a look at the full report (10MB). Chapters which are particularly of concern to food production begin on page 51.

There is sometng else even more important you should look into, if you’re not already doing it, and inform your average supporters, to say nothing of the wider public, what we can do.
I’m speasking of the apparently world wide, at least North Amrica & European collapse of bee colonies which is now at epidemic proportions. We need to knoiw what to do & fast if we want to eat more than tubers & snell the flowers jfm
Hi John: Thanks for the reminder about the very frightening issue of the catastrophic bee colony collapse in North America and Europe. Although we’re not experts on bees and other pollinators, we’re extremely concerned about this issue as it has the potential to seriously harm our efforts to protect biodiversity and build healthy food systems.
I’m thinking the Bee story might be a very good one for a future edition of the CyberSprout, but we will have to do some more research first. While doing a quick scan of bee research, I came across two different scientific studies. The older study raises the alarm about the death of the bees, while the most recent one suggests that the crisis is a myth!
