USC carries on Lotta’s legacy
"When I was a school girl in the ‘40s, I walked to and from school 4 times a day. We always knew when it was time to return to school because Lotta Hitschmanova would come on the CBC every weekday before the 1 pm news to say who she was…and to support her by sending money to 56 Sparks St, Ottawa."
USC Canada – still planting the seeds that Lotta first sowed

Dr. Lotta’s legacy lives on through USC’s work today, and in the values and approaches that underpin our work. In a very real way, the seeds that Lotta first sowed for us in the mid 20th century are still being nurtured, saved and re-planted by USC in the 21st century!
Here are five diverse “seeds” that first germinated during Lotta’s time and that are still being planted by USC many decades later:
- Our focus on food, agriculture and farmers.
- Women at the heart of our work.
- Respect and partnership.
- Empowering local people.
- A social justice vision and call to action.
