With more than six decades of experience in rural communities throughout the global South, USC Canada promotes farmers’ rights to define their own food, agriculture, and livestock systems. Through campaigning, advocacy, and speaking out for social justice, we act with partners and the public to create a better world.
By building on their experience, knowledge, and extensive skills to better the lives of their families and communities, farmers in developing countries can develop their own solutions to the challenges they face. That’s why most of our resources go to community-led initiatives.
But there are system-wide injustices – spurred by government policies, economic barriers, or social structures – that limit what people can achieve. Some of these injustices are supported by approaches to rural development that threaten farmer well-being. Approaches that promote agricultural modernization at any cost, for instance, can harm the agricultural biodiversity that small-scale farmers depend on, and can undermine community resilience and well-being.
We are all connected – across borders – and we need to realize the impact these policies can have on our lives. All Canadians need to engage in a dialogue about social justice, our food system, and development – acting together to ensure sound development policies in Canada and globally. With your help, we can create policies that give people the power to improve their lives and preserve our environment.
