Greens: Tatsoi
Stellar Seeds
Colours, shapes, taste, and smells are some of the joys of growing an organic garden. The certified organic seeds grown by Stellar Seeds are selected to offer the best of all these qualities. Stellar seeds are open-pollinated, grown in British Columbia, and farmed using holistic practices that maximize soil health and promote biodiversity.
An Asian green with a nutty, slightly sweet flavor, Tatsoi is a hardy plant that thrives in the cool weather of spring and fall, even resisting frosts and cold nights unharmed. Plants grow to 20cm tall, 30 cm around, and have dark green, spoon-shaped leaves that can be harvested individually or all at once. Adds a new flavour and texture to salads; also extremely good steamed or added to stir frys. Easy to grow.
Planting Instructions
Tatsoi prefers cooler weather, but tolerates warm weather. Start indoors 3 weeks before the last frost (Plant seeds 1/4″ deep). Plant every few weeks for continual harvest throughout season. Transfer outside after risk of frost has passed; spacing plants 4″-6″ apart. Water regularly and evenly to avoid bitterness. Begin harvesting individual leaves after the center rosette has begun to develop.
Seed Saving Tips
All vegetables and varieties in Brassica oleraceae (including sprouting broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers, calabrese, kales and brussels sprouts) will cross with each other. In the home garden, only save seed from one brassica type per season, or use alternate day caging. Prevent flowering for any poor-looking plants or any that are not typical for the variety for which you are saving.
In late fall, mulch with loosely packed leaves and remove mulch in spring.
Once most of the pods begin to look dry and beige, snip off the flower stalk and let dry further inside. If the season will be too short with frost/snows threatening, it’s best to cut the entire plant and hang it upside down leave them to mature further over a sheet indoors.
Mash unopened pods in cloth bag with mallet or by walking on them. Chaff can be winnowed out.
Place dry seeds in an airtight container like a jar or a plastic bag. The seed will keep well for up to five years so long as it is stored somewhere cool and dry. Remember to label with the variety and date.
