Planting Instructions
A mix of the top 11 dry beans grown at the Salt Spring Centre in 2007, this mix includes Six Nations, Black Coco, Beka Brown, Ireland Creek Annie, Ruckle, Jacob’s Cattle, Red Hawk Kidney, Molasses Face, Orca, Brown Pinto and Montezuma Red, making for a delightful cornucopia of colours and patterns.
New growers of dry beans will be very pleasantly surprised by how delicious and digestible they are. Dry beans deteriorate as they oxidize; they just do so much more slowly than broccoli or tomatoes. Dry beans are harvested when they rattle in the pods. The seeds are what you eat and they are what you sow. Most dry beans do not cross-pollinate, so you don’t need to isolate varieties.
The general rule of thumb is to plant beans in warm soil, and only pre-soak if you know there will be moist weather/soil for a few days. Beans should be planted approximately 3-6" apart.
